Why prepare before the inspection

A failed inspection means a second visit and lost time before you can renew your registration. Most failures come from small, fixable items, so a quick check a few days before saves a trip.

The checklist

Lights: headlights, brake lights, indicators, reverse and number-plate lights must all work. Tyres: no cracks, bulges or exposed cords, and enough tread on every tyre. Brakes: the car should stop straight without noise or vibration.

Windscreen and wipers: no large cracks in the driver's view and wipers that clear the glass. Warning lights: the dashboard should be free of engine, airbag and ABS warnings. Also check the horn, seatbelts, mirrors and any fluid leaks under the car.
